EMDR vs. Traditional Counselling: Which is Best?

Not sure if you need EMDR or traditional counselling? Dr. Lorna Robinson breaks down the differences to help you choose the best therapy in Manchester for 2026.

In 2026, we have more therapeutic options than ever before, which can lead to “choice paralysis.” Many clients come to my Manchester practice asking whether they should engage in traditional counselling or if EMDR therapy is the better route. The answer depends entirely on your history, your current symptoms, and how your mind processes stress. Understanding the difference between these two powerful approaches is key to ensuring you invest your time and energy into the right intervention.

Identifying Your Needs

Traditional counselling and talk therapies (like CBT or Person-Centered therapy) are excellent for exploring current life stressors, relationship issues, and general mood disorders. They often focus on the “here and now,” helping you change thought patterns and behaviors. However, if your difficulties are rooted in past trauma or if you feel “stuck” despite having talked about your problems for years, EMDR might be the missing piece of the puzzle.

As a Psychologist, I don’t believe in a “one size fits all” model. I use an integrative approach, using counselling to build a foundation of safety before moving into EMDR for deeper trauma processing.

  • EMDR for deep-seated trauma

  • Counselling for daily stress

  • Integrative therapy for OCD

  • Evidence-based anxiety relief

  • PTSD-specific interventions

  • Depression and mood support

  • Relational and family conflict

  • Building self-esteem and clarity

Whether we meet at the Manchester Royal Exchange or via video call, our first session will be about assessing which path is most appropriate for you. We look at your goals—do you want to understand your past, or do you want to stop the physiological symptoms of anxiety that are holding you back today?

Integrating the Best of Both Worlds

The most effective therapy in 2026 is often a hybrid. By using the reflective nature of counselling alongside the neurological “reset” of EMDR, we can address both the mind and the body. This holistic approach ensures that you aren’t just managing symptoms, but actually resolving the underlying causes of your distress to achieve lasting emotional freedom.

“Counselling gives you the words to describe your struggle, but EMDR gives your nervous system the permission to finally let it go.”
